- Academia.edu is a platform for academics to share
research papers. It holds over 21 million papers. A paid premium subscription provides full-text search, more
analytics and downloads.
- arXiv.org offers open access to over 1.4 million e-prints
in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance, Statistics, Electrical
Engineering, Systems Science, and Economics.
Essays and articles
- Aeon magazine of edited and curated content as essays, idea
pieces and short videos.
- Medium has articles and essays by writers, thinkers, and
storytellers. A paid subscription gives ad-free access but also includes original reporting, news analysis, and
opinion features from media partners such as The Economist, The New York Times, The Washington Post and
Financial Times.

- A Book Apart, brief books for people who make
websites.
- ACM, Association for Computing Machinery,
includes the ACM Digital Library,
online classic computer books plus subsets of books24x7, Elsevier ScienceDirect, SkillSoft Courses and Safari books.
- Amazon UK; music downloads are DRM-free MP3s but ebooks are DRM-encumbered. Use https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ and Amazon will give 0.5% of the
net value of the order to a charity you selected beforehand.
- apress technical books: ebooks are DRM-free.
- Archive.org has a vast and growing collection of old
books and documents, including an archive of classic books from the MIT Press.
- Baen sci-fi books and DRM-free ebooks and subscriptions
at Baen Ebooks.
- BCS, formerly the British Computer Society, offers member
services including EBSCo magazine abstracts and
articles.
- CCEL, Christian Classics Ethereal Library, has texts of
the Church Fathers and other Christian Classics.
- dev-books lists the most-referenced books by Stack
Overflow contributors by subject area.

- Scribd subscription-based book service that provides a
wide range of commercially published and self-published books. Now also has audiobooks.
- Smashing books DRM-free ebooks on web
design and implementation.
- Smashwords is an ebook seller including books by
Hillary Rettig and Yvon Prehn.
- Standard Ebooks take books from Project Gutenberg
and produces editions that pay attention to best practices in style, typography, and orthography. The books are
maintained on GitHub.
